Systems

Systems we change out

Each one has a written quote, a permit and an install day. What changes the number is listed under each.

  • Air conditioner and furnace, as a pair

The classic split system, replaced together so the coil, the air handler and the thermostat match.

    • Tonnage from a load calculation

    • Efficiency tier and staging

    • Duct condition

    • Permit and haul-away

  • Heat pump with a gas furnace behind it

A dual-fuel system. The heat pump runs most of the year, and the furnace takes over on the coldest nights.

    • Heat pump size and tier

    • Furnace input and venting

    • A thermostat that switches between them

    • Electrical and permit

  • Heat pump and air handler, all electric

No gas in the house, or none you want to keep. Includes the air handler, the heat strips and the electrical work.

    • Panel and breaker capacity

    • Heat strip size

    • Line-set length

    • Permit

  • Package unit

One cabinet that holds everything, set beside the house or on a slab. Common on homes with no attic or closet for an air handler.

    • Cabinet size and pad

    • Gas or electric heat

    • Duct connections

    • Crane or lift access if the cabinet is heavy

  • Ductless for an addition

A mini-split for a sunroom, garage room or addition where the old ducts do not reach.

    • Number of rooms

    • Line-set length

    • Wall or ceiling units

    • Electrical and condensate

  • Ducts and a thermostat during the changeout

While the old system is out, leaks, kinks and missing returns are cheap to fix. We show you what we find before we change the quote.

    • Sealing with mastic

    • Return air changes

    • Insulation at the plenum

    • A thermostat you can read

Questions

Picking a system

How do I know what size I need?

We calculate it from your house: rooms, windows, insulation and ducts. It is a calculation, not the size of the old unit, and it is written on your quote.

Should I get a heat pump?

In Charlotte winters a heat pump can heat most of the year. Whether to keep a gas furnace as backup depends on your house and your bills. We show both options on one quote.

How long should a system last?

It depends on the equipment, the installation and the care it gets. A system that needs a second repair in a season is worth pricing a replacement for, and we say when it is not.

Not sure what you have?

Text us a photo of the label on the outdoor unit and we will tell you what it is.
